Edit Transactional Email by Asking Claude Code

Edit transactional email wording, design or timing by asking Claude Code in plain English. What to say, how to test a change and how to roll it back.

Quick answer

To edit transactional email in a live SaaS, tell Claude Code which email to change and what you want instead, in plain English. Ask to see the new version first, send yourself a test from the chat, then let the change go live. If it doesn’t work out, ask Claude Code to restore the previous version.

Your emails are live, and now something needs to change: a price in the receipt, a warmer welcome, a reminder that goes out too early. This guide shows how to edit transactional email wording, design and timing by asking Claude Code in plain English, then check each change before your users see it.

Transactional emails are the automatic, one-to-one messages your SaaS sends when something happens, like a sign-up, a password reset or a payment. Changing one is the last stage of the lifecycle covered in our guide to transactional emails in Claude Code.

You’ll get messages to send for the most common changes, a way to test each one, and a plan for putting the old version back.

What can you change in a live email?

Almost anything: the words, the look, when it’s sent, who gets it and who it comes from. Each is one message to Claude Code.

What to tell Claude Code to edit transactional email

Say which email, what’s wrong with it and what good looks like. Claude Code finds the email, makes the change and tells you what it touched. With SimpleSends connected through its connector (an MCP server, the standard way AI tools link to outside services; here’s what MCP is), it can also send you tests while it works.

A wording change:

Tell Claude Code

Our welcome email feels stiff. Make it warmer and shorter, keep the Get started button, and give it a friendlier subject line. Show me the new version before you change anything.

Expect a draft in the chat. Nothing changes until you say yes.

Sample email

A change across every email:

Tell Claude Code

Update the footer on every email we send. Our new support address is help@yourcompany.com, and add our company address at the bottom. List each email you changed.

A timing change:

Tell Claude Code

The trial ending reminder goes out the day before the trial ends. Move it to three days before. What happens to people whose reminder is already scheduled?

Claude Code should explain the effect on people already part-way through a trial before it changes anything. For typical timings, see when each SaaS email should go out.

Three habits help:

  • Name the email by what it does (“the receipt after someone pays”). You don’t need file names.
  • Ask for one change per message, so each one can be undone on its own.
  • Ask to read the full email in the chat before it changes.

Where does the change happen?

Claude Code edits the email where it lives in your project, so users see the change once the updated project is live on your hosting platform. Ask Claude Code to tell you when that has happened.

How do you preview an email before it goes live?

Send yourself a test from the chat. Claude Code can send test emails through SimpleSends while you build, so you see the change in a real inbox before any user does.

Tell Claude Code

Send me a test of the updated welcome email at you@yourcompany.com. Fill in sample names and details so it looks like a real one.

When it arrives, check:

  • the subject line and the first line people see in their inbox
  • names and details filled in correctly
  • every link and button goes to the right page
  • it reads well on your phone and in dark mode

If your hosting platform offers preview deployments (a private copy of your site for checking changes), ask Claude Code to put the change there first. Our guide to testing emails before users see them has a full checklist.

A test only reaches the address you give it. Real emails go out from your live project, not from the chat.

How do you roll a change back?

Ask Claude Code to put the previous version back. Name the email and roughly when it was last right.

Tell Claude Code

The new receipt email is confusing customers. Put back the version we had before today’s changes, send me a test, and tell me when it’s live.

During a session, Claude Code saves a checkpoint (a snapshot of your files) before each message you send, so recent edits can be reversed. Anthropic describes checkpoints as quick, session-level recovery and recommends version control, such as Git, for permanent history. Git keeps a record of every saved version of your project, so ask Claude Code to use it for emails too:

Tell Claude Code

Each time you change one of our emails, save it to version history with a short note about what changed, so we can go back to any earlier version.

If a broken change is already live and needs to go fast, many hosting platforms can restore the previous version of your whole site. Vercel calls this Instant Rollback. On its Hobby plan you can return to the previous deployment only; on Pro and Enterprise, to any earlier production deployment. It rolls back everything in that deployment, not only the email.

Emails already sent can’t be recalled. If a wrong one went out, ask Claude Code to check the send logs to see who received it.

Frequently asked questions

Will changing an email affect emails that were already sent?

No. A sent email can’t be changed or recalled. Your edit only affects emails sent after the change goes live. If people received an email with a mistake, ask Claude Code to check the send logs to see who got it, then decide whether a short follow-up email is worth sending.

Can I make the edit myself instead of asking Claude Code?

Yes. Ask Claude Code to show you the full wording of the email in the chat. Rewrite it however you like, paste it back and ask Claude Code to use your version exactly as written. It keeps the layout, links and personal details in place around your words.

How do I change the from name or reply-to address?

Tell Claude Code the name and address you want. A new from name or a reply-to address on your existing domain is a quick change. Sending from a different domain needs that domain set up on the SimpleSends website first, including adding its DNS records where the domain is registered.

Can I update every email at once?

Yes. Changes like a new logo, brand color, footer or support address usually apply to every email. Ask Claude Code to update all of them and list each email it changed, then send yourself a test of two or three to check they all look right.

How often should I review my transactional emails?

Look at them whenever something they mention changes: prices, plan names, links, your support address or your branding. A quick read every few months also catches wording that no longer matches your product. Ask Claude Code to send you a test of each email so you can read them together.
